Industry Sharing Participants
Juan is an independent producer, educator and activist. He produced pioneering Singapore films such as ‘Perth’ and ‘Return to Pontianak’ along with other producing roles in tele-movies, broadcast series and international documentaries.
He began work as freelance production crew and video post-production. But his strength in development, honed from analyzing scripts for financing and distribution led him to sell a script to a Hollywood studio. Juan also worked for government organizations under talent development, content assessment, and training. He lectures at tertiary institutions and is also a frequent jury member and speaker at film-related events. As an activist, Juan believes in establishing professional skills standards for career progression. Candidly he considers himself to be a ‘has-been-wannabe’ embarking on writing a book about the film industry.
Starting his career at Medicorp’s TVC arm, Derrick moved on to MTV Asia, directing various on-air promos, and artist image spots. Wanting to try different drama and documentary genres, he left to freelance as a director/writer.
Derrick’s 2nd film, Colours, screened at more than 40 festivals worldwide and won awards in Australia and Asia. His poetic short, When Night Fa11s, secured a Special Mention at the I’ve Seen Films International Film Festival, the only Asian film that was awarded in Milan.
Collectively, his films have screened at numerous festivals including London, Tokyo, Sydney, Montreal, New York, Pusan, Shanghai and Milan.
